HOW DID WE GET HERE?

We love our partners. We want the happily ever after, the loving, fun, lasting relationship. We want to be that couple! And yet, despite our best efforts, we can end up feeling disconnected, lost, alone, or even at war with the most important person in our lives.

BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP TAKES PRACTICE.

Relationships are complex! By now it’s something of a cliché to say that relationships are hard work, that you must work at it to make your union strong and lasting. Sounds like a job—and not a very fun one at that. I would say it takes practice and a commitment to life-long learning; both can be challenging, but also fun and will make you grow in all the ways that make life worth living. Going to couples therapy at my office in Pasadena, CA will help you along the way.

WHAT IS IT?

Whether you call it marriage counseling, marriage therapy, couples therapy, relationship counseling, or relationship coaching, it’s about people who have chosen to be in a relationship coming together with a trained therapist to figure out how to be together and thrive, both individually and as a couple. In couples therapy and marriage counseling, couples explore the art and practice of being in their unique relationship.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM COUPLES THERAPY?

We need to know what is going on before exploring what to do about it. Each relationship is as unique and complex as the individuals that created it. The process of couples therapy begins with a deep dive into each person’s history and family of origin to understand the unique vulnerabilities and fears you bring into the relationship.

I have training in the PACT model (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy). Using the latest in human attachment, mindful awareness and somatic psychology, neuroscience, and emotional intelligence, I collaborate with couples to identify root causes of disconnection, communication breakdowns, and intimacy loss.  We work towards building a collaborative, loving, securely functioning relationship based true mutuality, fairness, sensitivity, and respect. Talking is one important element of the work, but sessions are also active and experiential, including skills practice, play, and moment by moment exploration.

Couples therapy can sometimes move more quickly than individual therapy. Sessions take place weekly and vary in length from 50 to 100 minutes depending on the availability of the couple and therapist.

DO YOU WORK WITH ALL COUPLE TYPES?

Yes. Whether you’re dating, engaged, married, looking for LGBTQIA+ affirmative couples therapy, or if you are in an ethically non-monogamous or polyamorous relationship, all kinds of relationships can benefit from this kind of work. Yes, the word “couple” is all over this page. My current relationship work focuses on two people at a time. For polyamorous relationships wanting to work with three or more people in the same session, I would be happy to assist with finding a qualified therapist to do that work.
