Pasadena Grief Counseling

You deserve a space dedicated to you and your unique experience where you can grieve fully. Grief is a natural response to death and demands care, time, and attention.  We don’t talk about moving on, but rather eventually, in your own time, moving forward—forever transformed by your grief but able to live fully while maintaining a connection to your loved one who has died.

WHAT IS GRIEF COUNSELING?

Seeking out grief therapy is a pro-active step towards healing. Grief counseling engages you in an active process of coming to terms with the reality of the loss, feeling, expressing, processing the emotions and pain of grief—having that witnessed—adjusting to life without our loved one, and finding meaning in life moving forward.

 HOW LONG DOES GRIEF LAST?

Grief does not follow a predictable schedule or move neatly through one stage after another. So many of us know the 5 stages of grief as described by Elizabeth Kubler Ross: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. People sometimes worry if they don’t experience one of these stages or if they seem to be going out of order. Grieving is not a linear process and there is no right way to do it. Grief models created by psychologists and doctors may provide guideposts, but they are not prescriptive or to be followed rigidly.

Though grief is with us our all our lives, we do know the intensity of the pain lessens over time, and with support, people report remembering with more love and less pain.

 GRIEF AND LOSS (WITHOUT DEATH)

We experience grief and loss in many situations that do not involve the death of a person or a pet. The end of a relationship, a divorce, the end of a friendship, or losing a job all are life transitions that entail loss and grieving. Often, we grieve the loss of a long-cherished idea we had of how our life was meant to go. We grieve childhood pain.

No matter the type of loss, grief therapy provides you with the space to have your pain witnessed and to live through your grieving process at your own pace. When others in your life are made too uncomfortable by your loss, or feel it is time you “moved on”, a good grief therapist will be there for you, to see you, and be your companion and guide in grief.
